Yesterday was the Go Topless day, in many big cities in the US, many topless women marched in public to commemorate the day when women earned the right to vote in the US (Aug 26th, 1920).
This event was organized by GoTopless.org , a web site that aims to change the laws in states where women are not allowed to be topless in public.
Nudity is a weird thing. We were born naked, but yet many people find it offensive.
In the US culture, many people quickly relate nudity with sex and this perversion is the reason why a lot of times nudity is offensive. As if the only context for nudity is sex. Why can’t we appreciate the beauty of the human figure without relating it to sex?
Nudity has been part of art for hundreds of years. In body painting, it’s about empowerment. It’s about accepting oneself and expressing oneself through art.
Just like the women who marched yesterday were not seeing their nudity sexual in nature. They weren’t trying to make others see them as sex object. Quite the contrary, they want to promote equality; empower other women to embrace their bodies and also to realize that women can also do other things that men can do. Being topless in public is just one act that brings the issue to the surface.
